Consortium IDs nation's top 10 AMCs

Daily Briefing

The University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) has identified the University of Colorado Hospital as the nation's top-performing academic medical center (AMC) for the second straight year.

The UHC's Quality and Accountability Study was created in 2005 to help AMCs identify strategies associated with high quality and safety performance.

For its 2012 list, UHC assessed the performance of 101 member institutions across the Institute of Medicine's six "domains of care": mortality, efficacy, effectiveness, safety, equity, and patient centeredness. The top ten health facilities were awarded UHC's Quality Leadership Award.

The Advisory Board Company congratulates the 10 AMCs recognized for their quality improvement initiatives and resulting honors. All ten organizations are Advisory Board members:

1. University of Colorado Hospital (Aurora)
2. Emory University Hospital (Atlanta)
3. The University of Kansas Hospital (Kansas City)
4. University of Utah Health Care (Salt Lake City)
5. Beaumont Health System's Beaumont Hospital (Royal Oak, Mich.)
6. Emory University Hospital Midtown (Atlanta)
7. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.)
8. NYU Langone Medical Center (New York City)
9. The University of Arizona Medical Center (Tucson)
10. Denver Health

"Every day our nurses, staff, and physicians strive to be the very best," University of Colorado Hospital President and CEO John Harney said in a release. "We're honored that our hard work is being recognized, but the primary reason we strive for the top is to provide our patients with that award-winning care."

University of Colorado Hospital is a part of University of Colorado Health—a five-hospital health system connected to the university's medical school and research center (UHC release, 9/13; Zubeck, "Indy Blog," Colorado Springs Independent, 9/14).
