- Minnesota: Mayo Clinic will invest $217 million into its Saint Marys Hospital campus to add 150,000 square feet of space to it Generose Building and another three floors to the campus' east tower, among other improvements. Some of the funding will be used to renovate the ICU to treat cardiac patients and expand the neonatal and pediatric ICUs. The new round of investment comes about four years after the health system made $72 million in improvements at the Saint Marys Hospital campus (Grayson, Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, 3/9).
- Missouri: Doctors at St. Louis Children's Hospital (SLCH) in 2016 completed a rare heart-and-lungs transplant on 15-year-old Spencer Kolman—the only pediatric heart-and-lungs transplant to take place in the country last year. And last week, Kolman went home. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the operation was so risky that two hospitals had turned Kolman down before SLCH took on the case. Pirooz Eghtesady, who performed the surgery, played down his role in enabling Kolman to get well. "This kid, in his relatively short life span, has experienced more hardships than many of us in our lifetime," he said. "There's no question in my mind that he has to be special and have special power to withstand everything" (Munz, St. Louis Post-Dispatch/Sacramento Bee, 3/9).
- Utah: Intermountain Healthcare has named Robert Allen as COO. He will replace Laura Kaiser on April 1, who is departing to become CEO of SSM Health. Allen is currently CEO of Park City Hospital and Intermountain's VP of clinical and outreach services. He has served at Intermountain for more than 22 years (Arndt, Modern Healthcare, 3/9).
