Around the nation: Mich. launches website to boost vaccination rates

Daily Briefing
  • Maryland: Nancy Abu-Bonsrah made history this week when she became the first black woman to be accepted into Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's 30-year-old neurosurgery residency program. Abu-Bonsrah, who grew up in Ghana, eventually hopes to return to the country to help build sustainable surgical infrastructure. "I want to be remembered for serving my community, whether it is through providing quality surgical care or helping mentor the next generation of surgeons," Abu-Bonsrah said.  "(It's a) unique thing ... everything is special about the match. It will be a dream come true" (Larkin, CNN, 3/22; Rege, Becker's Hospital Review, 3/22).

  • Michigan: The Michigan Health and Human Services Department has launched a website, ivaccinate.org, aimed at boosting the state's vaccination rates. The new website aims to answer questions parents might have about vaccination and features video clips of parents who opted to vaccinate their children after initially feeling undecided—a feature that state officials hope will help reach parents who are currently feeling unsure about vaccines. According to WZZM 13, Michigan has the 7th lowest rate of vaccination in the United States (Lego, WZZM 13, 3/20).

  • Washington, D.C.: More than 70 Senate staffers on Monday donated a total of 56 units of blood during the inaugural Senate Armed Services Blood Program blood drive. The Armed Services Blood Bank Center (ASBBC) hosted the blood drive at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. All donated blood will be used for sick or injured service members and their families. ASBBC is hoping the House will hold a similar drive (Gangitano, "Heard on the Hill," Roll Call, 3/23).
