- New York: NYU Langone Medical Center is seeking approval from the state Department of Health to build a $32.9 million ambulatory surgical center in Manhattan. The center, which was announced in January 2016, will feature physical therapy services and a multispecialty ambulatory surgical center. If approved, the center would staff specialists in gynecologic, ENT, and orthopedic surgery. NYU Langone hopes to open the center late next year (LaMantia, Crain's New York Business/Modern Healthcare, 3/23).
- Pennsylvania: CVS Health, University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, and Pittsburgh Public Schools, are launching an initiative to bring a drug prevention program to the city's classrooms. CVS originally launched the two-year program, called Pharmacists Teach, with Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. Under the latest initiative, students from Pitt's pharmacy school will participate in Pharmacist Teach by educating students about the dangers of prescription drug misuse (Gough, Pittsburgh Business Times, 3/23).
- Rhode Island: M. Teresa Paiva Weed, who has served as a state senator for more than 20 years, will serve as the Hospital Association of Rhode Island's (HARI) next president. Paiva Weed played a major role in the development of the state's Medicaid managed care program, was lead sponsor of a bill that created a statewide health information exchange, and championed bills addressing mental health, substance abuse, and lead poisoning, AHA News reports. She will replace Michael Souza, who has served as president since 2014 (AHA News, 3/23).
