Around the nation: Henry Ford Hospital CEO to retire

Daily Briefing
  • Colorado: Children's Hospital Colorado physicians plan to launch 25 clinical trials within the next six months. The news comes after President Trump earlier this month signed the RACE for Children Act, which seeks to boost the number of clinical trials available to pediatric cancer patients. The law allows experimental drugs that are being tested in adults that show possible efficacy for pediatric cancer to be used in clinical trials with children (Zimmerman, Becker's Infection Control & Clinical Quality, 8/23).

  • Kentucky: The Letcher County fiscal court on Monday voted unanimously to approve a measure that would create a needle exchange program. The measure would also make Narcan, a drug used to reverse an opioid overdose, a standard on all emergency response vehicles in the county. The Letcher County City Council will vote on the proposal next month (AP/Sacramento Bee, 8/23; WYMT, 8/22).

  • Michigan: John Popovich on Wednesday announced he will retire from his post as president and CEO of Henry Ford Hospital at the end of the second quarter of 2018. Popovich, who's been at Henry Ford since 1980, also serves as EVP and CMO of Henry Ford Health System. System CEO Wright Lassiter III said Popovich's "legacy includes building, leading, and nurturing a team that is well-positioned to continue the hospital's reputation as an academic medical center highly regarded for its research, education, and clinical excellence" (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 8/23)
