Around the nation: University of Iowa football fans kick off new tradition for children's hospital

Daily Briefing
  • Iowa: The thousands of fans watching the University of Iowa football game Saturday turned and waved to the patients at the nearby University of Iowa Children's Hospital at the end of the first quarter. The new tradition complements the football team's longstanding fundraising efforts for the hospital—which overlooks the team's stadium—including the "Touchdowns for Kids" program and personal donations from head coach Kirk Ferentz and his wife (Bean, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/5).

  • Vermont: Rutland Regional Medical Center has asked the Green Mountain Care Board for approval to begin a $21.7 million expansion project. According to the Associated Press, the center has requested a certificate of need for the project, which would add a two-story medical building to the facility for office space for the certain specialties, including audiology and orthopedic specialties (AP/Sacramento Bee, 9/5).

  • Wisconsin: Hudson Hospital & Clinic has tapped Thomas Borowski to serve as president, succeeding retiring president, Marian Furlong. Borowski, who will begin his new position on Oct. 6, previously served as the CEO of certain Mayo Clinic facilities in Minnesota, among other leadership positions in the Mayo system (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/5).
