Around the nation: Doc and patient to hike Mount Kilimanjaro together

Daily Briefing
  • Illinois: After a battle with pancreatic cancer, Ken Brown on Thursday will leave to hike Mount Kilimanjaro—joining Malcolm Bilimoria, an oncology surgeon at Northwest Community Healthcare who cared for Brown during his cancer treatment. Following his successful surgery, Brown told Bilimoria during a follow-up visit about plans to hike Mount Kilimanjaro, and Brown joked that he would come, too, since he'd wanted to hike the mountain after visiting Tanzania in 2011. When Brown got a clean bill of health, Bilimoria took him up on the plan. Brown, Bilimoria, and other physicians will start their hike Sunday (Jordan, ABC 7, 9/25).

  • New York: NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn has unveiled a unit that will focus exclusively on the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. The unit has state-of-the-art diagnostic and digital video monitoring equipment, which will allow staff to watch patients closely in case of seizure activity. Staff at the new unit work with NYU Langone's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center in Manhattan (Jones Sanborn, Healthcare Finance News, 9/25).

  • Texas: UMC Health System has tapped Mark Funderburk to serve as the system's next president and CEO. Funderburk will assume the role Jan. 1, 2018. Currently, Funderburk is administrator, EVP, and COO for the system. Departing CEO David Allison is retiring at the end of the year (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 9/25).
