The 'Best Places to Work,' according to Modern Healthcare

Daily Briefing

Modern Healthcare on Friday released its 2017 ranked list of the "Best Places to Work" in health care, featuring hospitals, suppliers, and payers.

Sixty-two of the honorees are Advisory Board members.

Congratulations to Advisory Board members named to the list

Methodology

Any organization in the United States that works in health care, has at least 25 employees, and has been in business for at least a year was eligible to apply for consideration.

Modern Healthcare gathered information from each employer's leadership team about the company's policies, practices, demographics, and benefits. The publication then surveyed the company's staff about eight core areas:

  • Leadership and planning;
  • Culture and communications;
  • Role satisfaction;
  • Working environment;
  • Relationship with supervisor;
  • Training and development;
  • Pay and benefits; and
  • Overall satisfaction.

For this year's edition, Modern Healthcare ranked a group of 75 providers and insurers on one list and a group of 75 suppliers on another. Modern Healthcare previously released an unranked list in May.

According to Modern Healthcare, the top 10 best providers or insurers to work for are:

'Healthiest Award' winners

Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound—in addition to ranking as the No. 1 provider or insurer to work for—also received the publication's "Healthiest Award" for providers or insurers, while the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) earned the award among suppliers.

According to Modern Healthcare, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound offers employees discounts on local gyms and fitness trackers, connects employees with a team of dieticians and nurses, and features several fitness-focused spaces, such as a meditation garden, on-site yoga classes, and a two-mile walking path.

Meanwhile, ECFMG takes a "mind/body/spirit approach" to health and wellness, Modern Healthcare reports, such as by connecting students to fitness classes, telehealth services, and even a loan program for emergencies such as a broken car. Betty LeHew, VP of human resources at the commission, said, "We don't look at health as just fitness but as total well-being," adding, "Our benefits encompass the entire lifestyle—financial and emotional wellness and work-life balance."

'Millennials Award' winners

Advantage Home Health Services won Modern Healthcare's Millennials Award among suppliers, while Divurgent garnered the award among suppliers.

According to Modern Healthcare, about 60 percent of Advantage Home Health Service's 100 nurses, home health aides, social workers, and physical therapists are millennials. Staff credit the organization's success among millennials to enthusiastic mentoring and early adoption of EHRs.

Family-Friendliest Award winners

Modern Healthcare awarded Sutter Davis Hospital the Family-Friendliest Award among providers and insurers, while ECFMG took the top spot among suppliers.

According to Don Hartman, director of human resources at Sutter Davis, the hospital has established a culture of caring by training new employees on a set of expected behaviors, such as escorting people where they are heading rather than simply providing directions. Moreover, employees are encouraged to bring their families to hospital events. "Whether it's a volunteer or an employee, we treat everyone as one large family," Hartman said. "Families are a part of everything we do" (Best Places to Work 2017 gallery, Modern Healthcare, accessed 9/29; Pyrillis [1], Modern Healthcare, 9/29; Pyrillis [2], Modern Healthcare, 9/29; Best Places to Work 2017 list, Modern Healthcare, 5/20).

New: Drive organizational change—without overloading managers
