Around the nation: CMS' Patrick Conway heads to BCBS of North Carolina

Daily Briefing
  • Maryland: The Baltimore City Health Department has launched a pilot through the city's B'More Healthy Babies program to train five city residents as doulas. Doulas will be trained on how to emotionally support women during delivery, help women create plans around their birth process, educate pregnant women on healthy living, and aid new mothers as they adjust to caring for a newborn (AP/Sacramento Bee, 8/8).

  • North Carolina: CMS in an internal memo on Tuesday announced Patrick Conway, a top official at CMS, will leave the agency and take over as president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) starting Oct. 1. Conway, a pediatrician who joined CMS in 2011 as CMO, served as CMS' acting administrator at the beginning of this year, before the Senate confirmed President Trump's nominee for CMS administrator, Seema Verma. Conway currently serves as CMS' CMO, deputy administrator of Innovation and Quality, and director of CMS' Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) (Clason, CQ HealthBeat, 8/8 [subscription required]; Morse, Healthcare Finance News, 8/8; Livingston, Modern Healthcare, 8/8; Cancryn, "Pulse," Politico, 8/9).

  • Virginia: Health officials have issued warnings that some mosquitoes in the state's Richmond and Henrico counties tested positive for West Nile virus. Officials are advising area residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, such as by using insect repellent, staying indoors, or wearing long-sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are most active, as well as eradicating areas of standing water (AP/Sacramento Bee, 8/8).
