Health care's '100 Most Influential': Modern Healthcare releases annual ranking

Daily Briefing

Modern Healthcare on Saturday released its 16th annual ranking of the "100 Most Influential People in Healthcare," which recognizes several health care executives, policymakers, industry leaders, and more.

Congratulations to Advisory Board members named to the list

How MH made its list

For the list, Modern Healthcare selected 300 finalists from 6,800 nominations submitted between March 27 and April 28. The publication then asked readers to cast ballots for their top candidates among the finalists. Readers' votes made up 50 percent of the final selection, while input from Modern Healthcare's senior editors made up the other half.

Citing "rapidly changing developments" stemming from congressional efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Modern Healthcare said this year, editors also added in several "influential lawmakers who were not among the 300 names on the ballot."

Lawmakers take top spots

Modern Healthcare awarded the top spot on the list jointly to Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), John McCain (Ariz.), and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) for their votes against a so-called "skinny repeal" measure that would have repealed the ACA's individual and employer mandates while making a few other changes to the law. According to Modern Healthcare, their votes "dramatically reshaped the epic political battle over the future of the ACA." The three senators did not respond to Modern Healthcare's request for interviews.

Other politicians, policymakers, and administration officials in the top 25 of this year's rankings include:

6. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.)
7. President Trump
12. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)
13. HHS Secretary Tom Price
15. CMS Administrator Seema Verma

Join us next month: How executives can help managers drive change now

The flow of organizational change initiatives hitting managers at once is overwhelming, with any one manager juggling 5 to 15 initiatives simultaneously. This volume of initiatives exists because it’s hard for any one executive to have the full picture of all the changes rolling out across the organization.

In this webconference, we’ll cover four best practices to help executives better coordinate initiatives and make them more "doable" for managers.
