Around the nation: Michael Jordan donates $7M to Novant Health

Daily Briefing

The donation will be used to build two Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinics, in today's bite-sized hospital and health industry news from Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

  • Florida: Munroe Regional Medical Center has selected James O'Loughlin to serve as CEO. O'Loughlin, who started his new role on Oct. 9, previously served as president and CEO of Memorial Hospital in Florida and as CEO of various health organizations in Alabama, Oklahoma, and South Carolina (Vaidya, Becker's Hospital Review, 10/9).

  • Georgia: At Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, volunteer David Deutchman has earned the nickname "ICU Grandpa" for his work visiting newborns and their parents. Deutchman began volunteering at the hospital after retiring from a career in international business marketing, starting in the pediatric ICU and later adding the NICU. Elizabeth Mittiga, a NICU nurse, said, "He's just a really special person to us, as nurses, and our babies just adore him" (Francis, ABC News, 10/9).

  • North Carolina: Basketball player Michael Jordan is donating $7 million to Novant Health. The funding will be used to build two Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinics. The facilities, which are expected to open in 2020, will provide care to at risk and underserved communities in Charlotte (Ellison, Becker's Hospital CFO Report, 10/9).
